Don't Let New York Cut the AMSNY Diversity in Medicine Program and Scholarship!
Send a letter to your state elected officials urging them to reverse cuts to the Diversity in Medicine Program and Scholarship.
Diversity in the physician workforce is essential – something which is even more apparent now during the COVID-19 pandemic. AMSNY's Diversity in Medicine Program and Scholarship have been supporting Black, Latinx, and Native American students in their quest to become doctors for more than 30 years. Despite the persistent lack of diversity in medicine and the success of these programs, New York State has slated these programs for students from underrepresented backgrounds for severe budget cuts over the years.
Now, in the midst of a global pandemic disproportionately impacting communities of color, Governor Cuomo has again slated this valuable program by 20% in the proposed FY2021-2022 New York State budget. Given the drastic racial disparities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, valuable programs that enable Black, Latinx, and Native American students to become doctors should not be cut!
Write to your elected officials and tell them to ensure that the Diversity in Medicine Program receives $1.244 million in the budget and that the Legislature provides $500,000 for the Diversity in Medicine Scholarship Program.
